OTHER WAYS OF INCREASING VOTER TURNOUT??

Firslty I would like to thank all those who have joined this blog as CONTRIBUTERS and all those who have given their invaluable thoughts on MOV. Thank You all and keep those ideas and opinions comming. We are dying to know whats going on, in your mind.

Now it has been some time since the 1st post and we have decided to move to the next point that we had in our mind:

"HOW CAN WE INCREASE THE VOTER TURNOUT IN THE ELECTIONS??"

The thing is that we want to know what you think can be a possible answer to the above question apart from the one we have provided ie MOV.

TAKE "MOV" OUT OF THE PICTURE FOR A SECOND. WHAT OTHER IDEAS CAN YOU COME UP WITH WHICH CAN SOLVE THE ABOVE PROBLEM???

Give you ideas in the form of comments to this blog post. We can't wait to hear those ideas.

  1. Well the solution to the problem is to remove the causes

This can be done by bringing the voting system to the voters instead of bringing the voters to the voting system.

Even though voting is important for the voters, it is not taken that seriously. So this kind of effort will have to be made.

Voting system can be brought to the voters if MOV is implemented.. Infact I cannot think of a better way.

However implementing MOV on a large scale as desired may have many issues. Also MOV will be helpful only to those who have access to Mobile or Internet. However a large part of our populaion resides in rural areas where such facilities are not so common.

In such a case, probably, people can be sent to individual houses to collect votes. Very tedious procedure but achievable... as even census is taken in that way.

But I hope MOV can be implemented. The idea is HUGE and it will definitely make a lot of difference to the nation.

  2. India is a country driven by compulsion and necessity. We all in our daily life(well most of the people who do not vote)manage to arrange teo square meals a day for our family. We also do not forget to file our income tax returns each year because it is criminal not doing it.
In my opinion apart from the usual method likes voter incentives, more polling booths,MOV's etc the only method to make sure that the elected candidate has been chosen by the people of India and not by a certain section of it is TO MAKE VOTING A LAW AND NOT VOTING A CRIME.

  3. how many of us think that we need a clear picture of the candidates to whom we are casting our votes??? as in

    1.the educational details
    2.police records(if any)
3.past record (as politician and elected candidate)
    ??

I think these things can make a lot of difference.........

  4. Yes, its a good idea to make it compulsory to vote unless you have a genuine incapability(eg. illness). In Australia, u can be fined heavily if you do not vote. It is, after all a basic duty one must fulfill just like paying taxes.

Also i agree that candidates must give out clear information about their education and past record. Also the minimum educational qualification to contest an election should at least be graduation. But what about the voters who still vote for guys with a criminal background. Its pathetic that WE vote for guys not capable of doing any good, and so the other side of the coin is that such voters deserve no welfare. I look forward to what others think about this..

  5. if candidates with poor track records of any kind are not allowed to contest in the 1st place i doubt that voters will want them in power...I also dont think that voters vote for such candidates out of their own free will...theres always another reason for such a thing...no one wants to commit suicide, but many are forced to due to the circumstances...(i know its a very scary example but now u get the real picture).

Further its important to think out the laws related to non voters... its not always the voters fault... but i think that voter registration shud be made compulsory. This can be achieved while taking the census of the country...leme kno wat u thnk...

  6. The vote we cast is kept confidential, hence i don't think anyone has to vote for a criminal out of fear or other "reasons". If my friendly neighborhood candidate bullies me to vote for him i can still vote against and tell yes i voted for u.

The registration process has to improve for sure. Since the census is taken in 10 years so i don't think its a gud idea to include voter reg. with it.(thats too big a time in India for a govt to stay). We can have a system in which govt can make a database of all citizens right from the time of their birth certification. And when a guy turns 18, his voter reg. card will automatically be sent to his nearest post-office where he can go and prove his identity and take his card. And he shall be punished if he doesn't come to take it within a week. But this requires first that the govt makes a record of the citizens.
Anyway don't you think any govt must have a sound record of its citizens, i mean a reliable one.

  7. what u are toking about is a social security no...like they have in the US...that is an ultimate method of maintaining a database of all citizens with a registered birth...but still the idea of punishing the citizen...well i cant seem to digest it...and shud it be so simple as you have stated?? Confirming ones identity is not a simple thing...i know that from a recent experience i had when i had to get a police verification done for my passport...

But tell me this...if u have a national database of all citizens who have got their births registered and issue all of them a social security number then do u really require a separate voter id card?? wont that Socio-Security-Number be enough??

  8. By punishment i mean a 'fine', not imprisonment, so that ppl do not take their duties lightly.
Yes, confirming your identity isn't so much of an easy task, but you'll have to do it only once i.e on the 18th birthday.
The social security no. i agree, is evidence enough, and when the person votes, the voting software can verify from his records whether he is above 18 years of age or not, failing which his vote shall be discarded.

Making a database would sure be a tedious but one time effort, and we won't have to get our govt school teachers and other employees on the election duty again, thats another advantage.
